Biographical note: 
Carlos Azevedo is a research fellow at the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES) in Portugal. Previously, Carlos was a visiting fellow at the Open University Business School in the United Kingdom, where he completed his PhD in 2022. Carlos’ research focuses on marketised higher education systems and their impact on students’ discourses and practices (his monograph on students’ discourses and practices in marketised higher education systems will be published by SRHE/Routledge in 2026), student activism, academic freedom, and the public-private mix in higher education. Carlos has presented his research at several international conferences, such as EGOS and Scuola Democratica. Carlos co-curated a webinar series on the theme of Academic Freedom Under Attack (https://academicfreedomunderattack.com). Carlos is a member of the executive committee of the Council for Defence of British Universities (https://cdbu.org.uk). He is also a member of the British Sociological Association, the Society for Research into Higher Education (SHRE), and The Program for Research on Private Higher Education (PROPHE). Before joining academia to pursue his doctorate, Carlos worked as a qualified lawyer and a contract and project manager in Portugal and abroad.
